Mission

The James Gallery is a unique exhibition space that centers student training and pedagogy at every level of its operation.

Its mission is threefold:

  1. To present and promote high level, engaging exhibitions of contemporary art that dialogue with research and teaching being undertaken at Graduate Center by faculty and students, with a particularly close relationship to the PhD Program in Art History.
  2. To mentor students in the research, development, installation, and promotion of art exhibitions. Through mentored fellowships, students are employed to run the day-to-day operations of the gallery.
  3. To interface with the public via programs that connect the gallery’s exhibitions to new research at the Graduate Center.

Fellowships

Each year the James Gallery employs two part-time fellows to support the work of the gallery. The first is a Financial Operations fellow (who deals with payments and shipping) and the second is a Digital Media fellow (in charge of digital marketing, communications, outreach, and AV during events).

These positions will be advertised in January each year on the Graduate Center’s Fellowship Opportunities page.

The James Gallery also hosts a Public Pedagogy Fellow through the Graduate Center’s Fifth-Year Experience program. The fellow connects exhibitions with teaching across CUNY through educational materials, class visits, and public programs; further details and application instructions are available on the Fifth-Year Experience page.
